Prostate Enlargement BPH

As men get older, their prostates tend to slowly increase in size and in the older age group prostatic enlargement is a major cause for voiding symptoms.

VOIDING SYMPTOMS/BPH

The urinary bladder stores urine that drains down from the kidneys. When the bladder fills its walls are stretched which sends a signal to your brain letting you know that it needs to be emptied. At the appropriate time the bladder contracts and the sphincter muscle opens allowing the free passage of urine through the urethra. The prostate is a rubbery organ that surrounds the part of the urethra immediately below the bladder. The urine passes through the central portion of the prostate. When the prostate is enlarged it compresses this part of the urethra which causes an obstruction to the flow of urine.

After the initial consultation with your Urologist several investigations will be discussed and organised as deemed necessary.

An enlarged prostate that causes a blockage to the flow of urine can cause unpleasant symptoms and impinge on your quality of life. Generally, medical therapy using tablets would be the first line of treatment. If this does not sufficiently address your symptoms or if the blockage is too severe, surgery is the next step. Some men prefer not to take medications for the long term, or suffer side effects and in these cases surgery is again indicated.
